A nearly five-year stint in prison gave Michael the chance to reflect on the mistake that landed him there. He was carrying a gun illegally to protect his family and got caught. He’s turned his life around, thanks to the Peoria Park District's ELITE Youth Program, and hopes to inspire others to follow in his footsteps.

Michael I hope that you will take your story and reach out and touch the lives of these younger kids! You have already made a start here, but I hope you reach further! See what a lot of communities fail to realize is you have to reach out to these younger generations. Kids need a positive role model in there corner. We are so quick to judge and tell a kid well your daddy was locked up you will be too. Instead of showing these kids that just bc you grew up in a rough situation, doesn't mean you can't get out of that situation! I hope you will continue to share your story and reach out to these young kids!

I hope this man turns his life around.
Why was his gun illegal? Was is stolen? Used is a crime? Or did he just forget to apply for a F.o.i.d card in illinois? Ive read stories of people with D.U.I's that got 3 years in prison. So if you drink and drive you will get the same as having a illegal gun?
I some what think this wasnt to protect his family after watching the video, he was up to no good and got caught. Becasue if you were trying to protect your family why wouldnt you just call the police. Thats what all politicans say to do , not to do anyhting wait till the police show up.
